International Denim Day is a worldwide annual rape-prevention campaign that was founded in 1999. The movement encourages anyone who stands in solidarity with sexual assault victims to put on jeans for one day during the last week of April in reference to an Italian Supreme Court decision that overturned a rape conviction because the teenage victim wore "very, very tight jeans."
After discovering this campaign a few years back, we knew this was an amazing cause that deserved more attention; we wanted to figure out the best way to get the creative community involved in bringing International Denim Day to Philadelphia. Additionally, the PhillyCreate community had been asking if we had plans to do a themed photo meetup for months. With International Denim Day approaching in April, it felt like the perfect opportunity to collaborating with our friends from PhillyCreate for a good cause.
We started by linking up with PhillyCreate veterans @aabougie, @v.w.a.l.a, and @indigobraziil to create a cover photo and campaign for the event. Once the meetup was announced we worked on building our “featured creatives” list, compiling a list of some the dopest creatives to come out of the last few PhillyCreate events, from black and white photography experts (@departed_archetype) to drone operators (@keithxtaylor) to bloggers making waves in the YouTube community (@domhadley_). We always aim to make each PhillyCreate meetup bigger and better than the last, but with such an important movement at the foundation we really wanted to go harder than ever. We chose the art museum and the Benjamin Franklin parkway as our meetup location, for maximum visibility; any curious passerby who asked “why’s everyone wearing denim?” would walk away knowing about International Denim Day and it’s meaning.
During the actual meetup there was a motivated, excited vibe hanging in the air, both from the old friends and new faces in the crowd. The day began with a networking hour as everyone scanned the crowd to see who they wanted to collab with first. By the time we were ready to shoot, there were already future post-meetup projects being planned. Nothing can stop creatives from creating, and that became more and more apparent as the day went on. We got escorted away from the Rodin Museum due to a wedding shoot and honked at while walking across the Parkway to get to our next location, and the whole time pollen was flying in everyone’s faces. But by the end of the day everyone still walked away with new connections and amazing content, as well as the opportunity to shoot at the Philly Art Museum during golden hour. Philadelphia’s first International Denim Day meetup was a success, and we’re already excited about what the next one will look like.
